Safe Sport

Sail Canada and Sail Nova Scotia recently introduced all yacht clubs and sailing schools to a national program called Safe Sport. The Safe Sport program is now mandatory for all yacht clubs and sailing schools that are members of Sail Nova Scotia.

Safe Sport is a program that is part of the growing movement to rid Canadian sport of all forms of harassment, discrimination and abuse.

This is achieved by having clubs like ours enforcing the Universal Code of Conduct to prevent and address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).

Prohibited behaviours under the code include, but are not limited to maltreatment of any type to people, whether it was intended or not. The maltreatment could be Physical, Psychological, Sexual or Neglect.

Sail Nova Scotia provided us with the official Safe Sport Policy Package as a template for our club to make it our own BEYC Safe Sport Policy Package. This document is available at the marina office.

The BEYC Board of Directors voted unanimously to adopt the Safe Sport Program. It will be in place for this boating season at the marina.

For BEYC members, participants in Learn to Sail Programs, sailors and guests of the marina: You should know that Ben Eoin Yacht Club and Ben Eoin Learn to Sail Program will provide a safe and welcoming environment where maltreatment of any kind is prohibited.

We have been provided with Safe Sport posters that will be placed in appropriate locations at the marina.
